Health Professions AAS - Surgical Technology

The Surgical Technology program prepares graduates to perform competently in the peri-operative setting.
The program incorporates didactic, clinical, technological, and laboratory teaching approaches throughout the curriculum. The program incorporates an educational classroom experience, laboratory simulation in the mock operating room suite and the interdisciplinary simulation center on campus, and off campus clinical setting.
Following graduation, students take the National Certification Exam administered by the NBSTSA {National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting).
Upon graduation the student will be eligible to apply for a position in the operating room, labor and delivery, interventional radiology, surgery centers, and physicians’ offices that perform surgical procedures.

  • Program Length: 24 months;
  • GPA for Admissions Eligibility: 2.50;
  • High School Prerequisite Courses: Biology with lab;
  • Application Deadline: January 15;
  • Program Admits: Fall semester only;
  • High School students applying to the Surgical Technology Program must sit for the Basic Skills Test and successfully complete all remedial coursework before the application deadline.

Prerequisite Courses:

  • Anatomy and Physiology I (4 credits; in-person lab required);
  • Algebra for Liberal Arts;

Prerequisite courses must be completed prior to the application deadline.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

  1. Identify the legal and ethical framework of the profession.
  2. Deliver professional and compassionate care with respect to cultural differences.
  3. Implement sterile technique to promote quality patient care.
  4. Communicate professionally and effectively with diverse individuals and groups to promote teamwork in the perioperative environment.
  5. Demonstrate clinical competencies and collaboration with other health professions disciplines.

Career Pathways

  • Surgical Technologist: Hospital; Main Operating Room, Labor and Delivery, Interventional Radiography / Surgi-center / Physician’s office that performs surgical procedures.
